More Than a Motorcycle: The Leadership Journey at

The Story behind the Story of One of America's Most Beloved Brands
Harley-Davidson's Unlikely People-Based Transformation

While the business press was celebrating Harley-Davidson's remarkable financial turnaround in the late 1980s, the company's leader, Rich Teerlink, was deeply concerned. He knew that the storied motorcycle maker-flush from having beaten back an assault by skilled and determined Japanese competitors-now faced a new and even more formidable challenge: maintaining and improving upon its success in the absence of an external crisis. Partnering with longtime organizational consultant Lee Ozley, Teerlink did something extraordinary: he moved beyond the top-down strategies that had just saved the company from extinction and began building a different Harley. The new Harley would be driven not by its top executives, but by its employees at every level. What happened over the next twelve years is the stuff of turnaround legend.

More Than a Motorcycle is the story behind the story of the purposeful transformation of an American icon-as told by the two individuals who were most deeply involved in that process. While marketers and the media alike have long celebrated Harley, this candid inside account goes behind the headlines to reveal the highlights and lowlights, the victories and setbacks, and the breakthroughs and dead ends experienced by Teerlink, Ozley, and others as the company engaged in this transformational change effort. Part corporate biography and part memoir of a rare CEO/consultant partnership, the book chronicles Harley's difficult journey from a traditional "command-and-control" culture to an open, participative organization in which employees no longer went along for the ride, but took new levels of responsibility for charting their course.

Teerlink and Ozley deliver three fundamental messages: that people are a company's only sustainable competitive advantage; that there is no "quick fix" to effect lasting and beneficial organizational change; and that leadership is not a person, but a process, to which every employee must contribute. They advocate for a new concept of leadership, which entails not demanding compliance, but earning commitment. They provide practical, reality-based prescriptions for developing employee alignment and effectiveness; lifelong learning opportunities; structures that support participation; and effective approaches to rewards, recognition, and meaningful communication. The authors also distill lessons from the Harley experience-such as living one's values and cultivating an environment within which all kinds of people can thrive-that may apply broadly to any business.

An inspiring, against-the-odds story of a business road less traveled, More Than a Motorcycle encourages today's organizational leaders to look around the next bend-and to give everyone within the organization a view of the road from the driver's seat.

I am looking into buying a brand new 2006 Buell Blast crotch rocket street bike. The price is about $4,500. This bike gets 76 mpg. This is an American made bike so the parts will be cheaper if I have to repair something. Buell is sold at most Harley Davidson places. Here are some other specs about the bike:

492 cc single cylinder engine
Holds 2.8 gallons of fuel
360 Pounds
4 stroke

Here is the site for the full specs:

http://www.buell.com/en_us/bikes/blast/blast/specs.asp

The only thing I'm worried about is will this 492cc engine be able to carry my weight alright. I don't need to go like 140 mph as I don't want to kill myself on my first bike but I would atleast like to be able to do 70 - 75 mph. They say this is a good begining bike but I don't want to be just "puttin" along. I'm about 5'9 and weigh 142 pounds. Could you all please tell me what you think about the bike and what its average top speed would be? Thanks!
Also, if it carries my weight alright, what would be the max weight of any passenger that could ride with me. Thank you all!

James Ferguson operates "Jim's 11-E Auto Sales" in Jonesborough, Tennessee, as a sole proprietorship. In 1999, Consumers Insurance Co. issued a policy to "Jim Ferguson, Jim's 11E Auto Sales" covering "Owned 'Autos' Onl." Auto was defined to include "a land motor vehicle," which was not further explained in the policy. Coverage extended to damages caused by the owner or driver of an underinsured motor vehicle. In 2000, Ferguson bought and titled in his own name a 1976 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, intending to repair and sell the cycle through his dealership. n October 2001, while driving the motorcycle, Ferguson was struck by an auto driven by John Jenkins. Ferguson filed a suit in a Tennessee state court against Jenkins-who was underinsured with respect to Ferguson's medical bills-and Consumers. The insurer argued, among other things, that because the motorcycle was bought and titled in Ferguson's own name, and he was driving it at the time of the accident, it was his personal vehicle and thus was not covered under the dealership's policy. What is the relationship between a sole proprietor and a sole proprietorship? How might this status affect the court's decision in this case? [Ferguson v. Jenkins, 204 S.W.3d 779 (Tenn.App. 2006)]

i was wondering why does it seem that bodymen do not get the respect (financially) they deserve for the work they do. it is just so strange because people will take there auto or motorcycle in for repair and have no problem paying the crazy labor rates being charged for repairs. but when it comes to having body work done everyone backs up and doesnt think bodymen should be able to charge similar charges. i think mechanics and bodymen both have special talents. for years i worked as a mechanic. but later began painting cars because i really enjoy it much better. but as the economy slowed last year and there again people not wanting to pay a fair price for work i (as a motorcycle enthhusiast) moved to orlando fl to attend MMI and learn to work on . i figured while things are slow back home in ga i could get some more education. but while here i decided to do some paint work to earn some extra money. well the new problem is there again people not wanting to pay fair prices. latest example, i took on a job doing a resto paint job on a 92 Trans Am convertable. the car was in pretty good condition other than i am actually redoing the car from where the owner thought i could do the work with having no experience. he pretty much butchered the car. he had already completly disassembled the body. all plastic and rubber body parts have been removed along with the doors fenders and truck lid. . i have worked 4 days on the car so far. i have completely sanded down all body parts, completed all bodywork, put all parts in high build 2k primer, wet sanded and blocked entire car with 220 grit sandpaper by hand using guide coat method, and reprimered all parts which will get a final wet sanding with 400 grit prior to paint. all together i have put in 22 hours of labor at an hourly rate of only $15 per hour. i am doing the car at his garage so i have no overhead cost is why i am doing it at such a low rate. anyways to he complains that i am taking to long to perform the work. i nearly told him to shove it and finish it himself. but i could use the money. i reminded him that i only do it the right way and that is the only way i do it. i gave him the option to let me finish or leave it for him to finish. he opted for me to finish it. what do you all think about the whole situation....
yea $15.00 an hour is cheap. but you know it is extra money and that does not include any material. when i first came to florida i took a job at a local paint shop. i work there for 3 days till i quit. they were actually a $199. and up to $599 for base clear paint shop. my experience FAR exceeds what they do. i just could not and would not train myself to do such low quality work. but you are right about comparing the paint jobs. dang for $299 i would not even color sand and buff one. it cost at least $100 in sandpaper, buffing compound, and pads. people need to wake up..
